It's not an official border, of course, but it's a point where the mountain becomes closer, more organized and more accessible. For families, the curious and nature lovers, it's the simplest way to “open the door” to the mountains.

The road climbs between woods, gentle curves and small places until, suddenly, the scenery opens up onto a wide plateau. There is Porta do Mezio: a group of buildings integrated into the landscape, surrounded by trees, paths, wooden structures, leisure spaces and that pleasant feeling of lighter air.

A park to discover

The great strength of Porta do Mezio is that it is, at the same time, point of arrival and point of departure.

When you arrive, because it immediately offers several things you can do right there:

walk along well-marked short trails;

climb to small viewpoints;

let the children explore parks, wooden houses and adventure trails;

relax in a picnic area or by the seasonal swimming pool;

visit the interpretive center, where the fauna, flora and human history of this territory are explained.

It's a starting point, because from here you'll find trails into the interior of the mountains, to brandas, viewpoints, water lines and wilder landscapes. For many visitors, the first visit is “just” to the Porta; on the second, they want to go further, follow a longer trail, explore a little more.

An experience designed to be simple

One of the great advantages of Porta do Mezio is that it takes the logistical burden off those who want to get to know the mountain without complications.

If you're going with your family, the value is obvious:

bathrooms,

shadow areas,

clear information,

routes adapted to different ages,

spaces where children can run, climb and play without too much risk.

For those who don't know Gerês well, it's a comfortable “base camp”: there are maps, explanatory panels, suggested routes and safety warnings. Instead of starting on a lost mountain road, you start in a place where there's someone who knows how to answer the question: “What do you recommend for today?”

All this makes the experience less intimidating. The mountains stop being something distant and become something you can experience slowly, sensibly and with pleasure.

Nature right next door

Although Porta do Mezio has infrastructure, it never feels like being in an urban park. You only have to go a few dozen meters away to feel it:

the smell of mountain vegetation,

the sound of birds,

the wind passing through the tops of the oaks and pines,

the contrast between the open light of the glades and the cool shade of the woods.

The shorter trails allow you to get a taste of the landscape without any major unevenness or technical difficulties. It's enough to see how varied the territory is: rocks, bushes, old trees, discreet water lines, small clearings with views.

For those with more time and preparation, there are also more demanding routes from here, which climb to higher altitudes and show the mountains at their broadest and quietest.

A full day or a strategic stop

The Mezio Gate adapts easily to different types of visit.

Short visit: ideal for those who are passing through Arcos de Valdevez and want to “feel the mountains” in two or three hours. You go up, visit the area, take a short trail, have a coffee, take advantage of the viewpoint and come back.

Full day: perfect for families or groups who want to combine a walk, picnic, outdoor play and a dip in the pool (when it's working). The day goes by without you noticing, between trails, breaks, conversations and discoveries.

Base to explore: If you're staying in the region for a few days, Porta do Mezio can be your base for several different excursions into the mountains, planning each day with reliable information.

In any case, the great advantage is the same: you leave with the feeling of having been in the heart of a mountain area, without having to have technical experience or a great deal of prior planning.

For those who are and those who aren't

Porta do Mezio is especially recommended for:

families with children,

people who like nature but don't have a demanding trekking habit,

mixed groups, where some want to walk more and others prefer to stay close by,

who are just starting to discover Gerês and need a structured first contact.

It may be less interesting for those looking for totally solitary experiences without any kind of infrastructure. In this case, the door will still be useful - as an entry point and for information - but the desired experience will, of course, be more inside, on the less trodden paths.

A delicate balance

Like any natural space with good accessibility, Porta do Mezio lives in a permanent balance between opening up the territory e protecting the territory.

Visitors can help maintain this balance with simple gestures:

follow the marked routes,

avoid setting fires outside authorized areas,

don't leave litter,

respect fauna and flora,

moderate the noise.

It's a small price to pay in exchange for the privilege of having easy access to one of Portugal's most striking natural spaces.

Many people say that the Peneda-Gerês National Park begins at the Mezio Gate.
